PLYMOUTH Argyle FC is pleased to announce the continuation of its partnership working with the University of St Mark and St John to offer a unique Higher Education Study programme of a Foundation degree in Football Coaching and Development.

The course is based at Marjon University, Plymouth Argyle Football Club and taught via a number of resources ranging from tutor led sessions, coaching sessions, work based learning and also coach development days.

The Foundation Degree title is (FdA) FOOTBALL COACHING & DEVELOPMENT, with the principal aims being to:

  • Provide vocational experiences with mentoring support to ensure students can deliver high quality, age specific community football coaching sessions.
  • Underpin theory based studies alongside practical and work based environments to develop a higher level of coaches and expertise in football development.
  • To develop a highly skilled workforce to initiate football programmes within the local community.
  • Support the wider role of football within football league clubs and communities.

In addition to the academic course, there is also a training and games programme where students will get the opportunity to participate in regular coaching sessions and a games programme against other Universities, Football League clubs and guest teams.

Every participant on the course will also undertake a variety of football/sports coaching qualifications during their time on the programme ranging from Street Soccer to FA Youth Awards and other qualifications.

Plymouth Argyle Community Manager Mark Lovell explains ‘the course is very unique and will help improve employability and help students gain vocational experience within the sports development spectrum and gain nationally recognised qualifications relevant to the sports industry. Students study in a flexible environment, and gain a Foundation degree at a University recognised as one of the leaders in sports coaching and performance.

For those interested in furthering their career there is no better way than to be educated through a nationally recognized university and to be partnered with a professional football club where you can gain a real insight and experience into football development. It also allows students the opportunity to improve their football performance by engaging in weekly sessions and competition with professional club coaches.’
