Olympic legacy programme giving young people the opportunity to try out different sports
Premier League 4 Sport (PL4Sport) started in September 2009 and uses the power of professional clubs to inspire young people to get involved in 12 different sports.
Run in partnership with Sport England, PL4Sport provides sessions for young people to try sports for the first time in the heart of their community. Through strong links with National Governing Bodies participants are given the opportunity to progress in to local clubs as well as talent pathways whilst many young people gain qualifications in the sport and volunteer on the programme.
This creates inspiring role models who are able to connect with the community.
The programme is now delivered by 36 clubs, each with a dedicated coordinator who works locally with the sports clubs and schools to maximise opportunities for young people.
The programme offers opportunities in 12 sports – athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, golf, handball, hockey, judo, netball, table tennis, tennis and volleyball – with over 80 new clubs being established across the 12 sports since its launch.
PL4Sport has three main objectives:
- Provide chances for young people to take part in sport outside school hours
- Increase the diversity of sports participation
- Improve the infrastructure and supporting links between schools and clubs
Feedback from young people at the sessions revealed why they participate in PL4Sport:
- The Premier League brand name is a real draw
- They like taking part in activities linked to their favourite football club
- The sessions are timed well and fit in with other out-of-school activities
- They provide opportunities to try new sports and have fun with friends
- The coaching is innovative and different, so they want to keep coming back
- The young leaders programme ensures they are getting involved in clubs and future coaches for each sport are being developed
Premier League Chief Executive, Richard Scudamore said: “Our Clubs have a fantastic track record in terms of investing in, and committing to, a wide range of good-cause and grass-roots initiatives. Premier League Kicks and Premier League 4 Sport – both part of our Creating Chances programme and focussed on sports participation – are hugely successful examples of that, and have benefitted thousands of young people in recent years.
"The increased investment, along with the expertise brought in by our new partner Sport England, provides our clubs with the opportunity to take these projects to the next level and get more young people playing sport across the country.”
