PLYMOUTH Argyle have reached the semi-finals of the PLFL League Cup after an entertaining 4-1 win at Wycombe Wanderers to set up a last-four clash with Liverpool.

The young Pilgrims are part of the Football Education programme run by Argyle Community Trust, combining professional football coaching with a BTEC qualification in Sport.

“We could have been behind in the first-half but survived with some great last-ditch defending that kept us in the game,” said Coach Lee Hodges. “We took the lead with an excellent goal, when Connor Rush latched on to a lovely pass from Charlie Hardcastle to score in style.

“Wycombe equalised from a rebound but the boys responded brilliantly to retake the lead just before half-time after good work from Alex Godwin on the wing created space for Ollie Bowen to smash in a superb strike from 25 yards.

“We possibly didn’t deserve to be in the lead at half-time but we were strong at the back, and took our chances. The third goal was a penalty scored by captain Fletcher Williams and Godwin made it 4-1 with a neat finish at the far post.”

It is a fantastic achievement and a measure of the opportunities available on the programme, with the next set of trials for the September 2016 intake being held at Saltmill in Saltash on Friday, March 4 from 1.30pm – 3.30pm
