PLYMOUTH Argyle Ladies are the county champions after beating Marine Academy Plymouth Ladies (MAP) in the SWH Ltd Devon Women’s Senior Cup Final.

Played at a soggy Coach Road, MAP ignored the underdog tag to snatch a shock early lead after some excellent build-up play led to Samantha Drewery steering a low shot into the gaping net.

The Green response was swift and superb, as the influential Becky Atkins equalised with a delicious long-range shot curled over the MAP goalkeeper Aimee Carpenter.

Both sides continued to create chances in an entertaining first period but it was Argyle who grabbed a vital lead when Mollie Taylor cooly rounded Carpenter before slotting home a neat finish.

As the wind picked up, it was a lot harder going for both teams after the break and the full commitment from every player on show led to some tasty tackles in a wholehearted game of football.

MAP still had their moments but Argyle deservedly extended their lead when Danielle Salt nodded home on 74 minutes, and that was enough to secure a 3-1 victory.

Well played MAP and congratulations to Argyle Ladies.
