IT has been almost a month since Argyle last played in the Peninsula League, a 2-1 win at Porthleven, and it’s fair to say the Green youngsters are chomping at the bit for Saturday’s visit of struggling Illogan RBL.

The Christmas period will be busy for everyone involved with the Pilgrims and our Peninsula outfit has the incentive of closing the gap on Division 1 West leaders Mousehole.

“It’s very frustrating when games are called off because professional footballers earn their money on a Saturday afternoon,” said Head Coach Kevin Nancekivell. “We get them going as much as we can in the week but the weather has also caused us a problem with getting grass pitches for training.

“We’ve used different surfaces and kept the boys ticking over for Saturday. A lot of the apprentices were involved in the midweek win over Tiverton in the Devon Bowl and they’re raring to go for Illogan.

“We’re heading into the Christmas schedule and, for the young lads, this will be an introduction to the reality that football doesn’t stop at this time of year. We’ll be training on Christmas Eve in preparation for the game on Boxing Day.

“There are plenty of points on offer over Christmas and I’m a traditionalist in the respect that this time of year is all about the big game on Boxing Day. It’s something I’ve been used to all my career and I relish being around football clubs at Christmas because the atmosphere is fantastic.”
