MARJON University overcame a very strong Exeter University side in a terrific game of football on Wednesday.

Marjon are managed by Gary Jeffery, who is the liaison between Marjon and Plymouth Argyle for the degree in Football Development and Coaching. Gary’s underlying message before the game was to play with no fear and enjoy the situation of a local derby.

The players took heed in a super first period, creating a number of chances that saw Pete Ireland and Lewis Irwin go close. Centre-back George Birkbeck then headed wide and Callum Thompson was narrowly off target with a free-kick.

Exeter were unable to penetrate a steadfast home defence and Marjon deservedly took the lead Liam Prynn when found the bottom corner just before half-time, but credit to the visitors for improving their tempo after the break, drawing level with a deflected effort.

Exeter then snatched a surprise lead via a swift counter but the Marjon response was full of character, pressing the ball and forcing an equaliser when Irwin was tripped in the box. Prynn kept his cool from the spot to set up a grandstand finish.

A thrilling encounter took another twist when Exeter won their own penalty, only for Marjon goalkeeper Jordan Tewesbury to produce a stunning save and the drama got even better in the dying seconds, as Thompson won the game with a wonderful solo run and finish.

“The lads created great chances in the first half and we need to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal,” said Jeffery. “Sometimes, this can haunt you but the work-ethic and belief shown by the players was fantastic. We want the same again next week.”

Up the Jons!
