Supporting inclusivity in football for LGBTQ+ community

The Argyle Community Trust is celebrating Pride Month across June and is delighted to be working with Argyle Pride, the official Plymouth Argyle LGBTQ+ Supporters Group, and Stonewall, a charity fighting for the freedom, equity and potential of LGBTQ+ people everywhere, to create its first LGBTQ+ football team.

The Trust have a proud history of inclusion and operate an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) working group within the Trust to ensure the support of all its communities. The introduction of the team will create a safe space for participants and an inclusive environment where everyone is respected.

Setting up the team is just the first step in a longer-term plan for this exciting initiative. Once the team is in place the aim is to play in small local leagues and develop further as more participants join.

Recruitment for the team is now underway and is open to all. Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or are an ally, you can tackle homophobia in football with the Argyle Pride Football Team. A first meeting has already been held with fantastic attendance by potential players and supporters.

Jason Chapman, Community Operations Manager and Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Argyle Community Trust, adds, “Pride is about communities coming together in celebration, protest, unity and solidarity. We work incredibly hard at the Trust to ensure we support all communities and to make anyone feel welcome within the Trust.

We are extremely proud to be starting our first LGBTQ+ Football Team and to be supporting Pride Month. Since first publicised, we have had overwhelming interest and support from local and national communities, and we can’t wait to get started.”

If anyone is interested in joining the team, or would like any further information about this or anything relating to EDI, please contact Jason Chapman on Jason.chapman@pafc.co.uk or call 07811 217376.
