Argyle Community Trust receives £9,320 funding to help overweight and obese men become heart champions

ARGYLE Community Trust will deliver their ‘Argyle Fans in Training’ project thanks to a Heart Research UK and Subway® Healthy Heart Grant.  This funding is aimed at engaging overweight and obese in a six a side Healthy Heart Football League with a focus on weight loss and getting sedentary men active.  Teams will earn bonus goals for weight loss, capped at 2lbs per week, to encourage healthy and sustainable weight loss.

Participants will go through a health screening for BMI, body fat, blood pressure and resting heart rate. A culture for healthy behaviour change will be developed through camaraderie with fellow team players and testimonies of weight loss journeys, as well as encouraging them to become heart champions.

The Heart Research UK and Subway® Healthy Heart Grant is made up of donations made in West Country Subway® stores in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset and the nationwide Subway Helping Hearts™ Family 5K fun runs. The money raised is reinvested back into local communities, to allow people to live healthier, happier, longer lives.

Health and Disability Officer Josh Grant who is leading the project said “We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Subway and Heart Research UK. Their generous grant will enable us to further our Health remit’s positive work within the community. The funded project will help alleviate preventable stress on the heart for physically inactive and socially isolated men. Our positive work will focus on adopting a healthier weight through playing the beautiful game.

Heart Research UK Head of Lifestyle, Barbara Dinsdale said: ““One of the aims of our Heart Research UK and Subway® Healthy Heart Grant scheme is to encourage people of all walks of life to improve their heart health.  We are really looking forward to supporting this project and are confident that it will have a positive effect in improving the heart-health of participants.”

Sacha Clark, Marketing Director for the Subway® brand in UK and Ireland said: “The Subway® brand is delighted to be able to help fund this worthwhile initiative which helps women to live healthier lifestyles. Subway® stores nationwide have enjoyed fundraising and it’s great to see local community initiatives such as this come to fruition as a result of the money generously donated by our customers both in store and at fundraising events, like our popular family 5K series.”

The project will commence in March 2018 and for more information, please contact Health and Disability Officer Josh Grant on josh.grant@pafc.co.uk
