Argyle v Liverpool 1IT was a tough but useful experience for the Plymouth Argyle Football Education squad after a heavy defeat to the Liverpool FC Foundation in the semi-finals of the PLFL League Cup.

Much to their credit, it was very clear to see that a lot of the Liverpool have been a part of the famed Academy system at Anfield and some of the football they produced at a windy Seale Hayne was sublime to watch.

The Pilgrims started brightly enough and had efforts narrowly off target from Tallen Mitchell and Alex Godwin before Liverpool burst in front with two quick goals from Aaron Pomeyie and Elliott Nevitt.

Argyle battled manfully across the pitch and the third goal from John McGrath was a real killer blow. Liverpool turned on the style before half-time with a header from Michael Muscat and a swift brace from the impressive Jack Hazlehurst.

Although Liverpool added further goals after the break from McGrath and Nevitt, Argyle performed much better in the second period and it was a terrific experience to play against a club of such stature.

The Football Education programme at Plymouth Argyle provides youngsters with an opportunity to achieve qualifications for higher education and future employment, while maintaining their football development by competing in national competitions.
