Biggest Ever Football Session inspires next generation of female footballers

As part of the celebrations for International Women’s Day, Trust coaches have been leading a Let Girls Play Biggest Ever Football Session at Mayflower Community Academy.

Over 60 students and 25 women attended the Plymouth school to participate in this afternoon’s football event, taking part in skill-based learning and small-sided matches with Trust Premier League Primary Stars Officer Adam Wallis.

A record-breaking 465,000 girls from 5,000 schools across England have been taking part in the FA and Barclays’ third Biggest Ever Football Session, as part of the Let Girls Play campaign.

This year, the Biggest Ever Football Session has seen more registrations than ever before, with 71 per cent of the schools who have signed up having never done so before, highlighting the ever-growing demand for girls to play football.

76 per cent of schools who have taken part in the previous sessions have stated the activity has influenced equal access in their school.

The sessions taking place up and down the country mark a year to the day since the UK Government committed to unlocking equal opportunities for girls to play sports including football in their schools.

Sarah Murphy, Classroom Teacher and PE lead at Mayflower Community Academy said: “We are so excited to have been able to run this session with such success and having over 80 females at the event was incredible. It is brilliant to see so many girls keen to participate in physical activity especially on International Women’s Day. A big thanks to Argyle Community Trust for supporting us today.”
