THE latest round of University fixtures saw a local derby in the Cup, as students on our Football Degree programme at Marjon took on their counterparts from Plymouth University.
Marjon adapted well to a change of shape worked on with the coaching staff in the build up this fixture and played some lovely football in tough conditions, but with no reward in front of goal.
Plymouth Uni did briefly threaten with a bustling run but the officials had spotted a handball, and the Marjon defence heeded that warning in resilient fashion.
Despite the dominance, it remained 0-0 at half-time and the message from manager Gary Jeffery was all about staying patient.
The second period opened with Kyle Marks going close and then the introduction of substitute Liam Prynn, who is recovering from a knee problem, gave Marjon that extra cutting edge in the final third.
Prynn had an immediate impact, as his rifled shot was parried by the Plymouth Uni ‘keeper and an easy tap-in for Marks. It was very soon 2-0, as Callum Thompson found space on the edge of the box to rifle home a sweet finish.
Thompson then delivered a delicious cross for George Birkbeck to head in a third and Prynn was next to join the scoring charts. Prynn created room for Thompson to make it 5-0 and the scoring was completed by a Lewis Jago pass picking out Prynn for his brace.
A fully deserved win and congratulations to man of the match Phil Payne.
