MP visit for thriving employability programme in Cornwall

Newquay played host to the latest cohort of the Argyle Community Trust employability programme ‘Sport Works’ with support from the wonderful people at Newquay Jobcentre.

The six-week, interactive programme, already successful across Cornwall following its introduction this year, aims to enhance employability prospects of those over 18 through classroom, practical and physical activities. The focus is on increasing motivation, self-esteem and giving participants the opportunity to improve health, wellbeing and confidence.

The Newquay cohort became champions in their league, with data showing soaring levels of wellbeing and resilience. The whole group completed the six weeks with all nine securing employment at the conclusion of the programme.

Travis, a delighted participant, said: “It has changed my life and been brilliant. Before, I wouldn’t leave my bedroom. Now I have made great friends. The programme is the best thing I’ve ever done!”

Martin added: “It’s a great balance of employability skills, confidence building and knowledge. Jordan delivers the programme in a fun and engaging way.”

As well as achieving a Level One qualification in Employability, the group had some amazing experiences during the programme. There were two visits to Newquay Zoo as part of a team bonding day, and a tour of the Theatre of Greens, with the group having the added surprise of meeting the first-team players!

Following some incredible feedback received by the Jobcentre praising Argyle Community Trust Employability Tutor Jordan Myatt, MP for St Austell and Newquay Steve Double was keen to learn more.

Mr Double paid the group a special visit at Newquay Jobcentre to discuss the course with the group and show his support for its success, adding: “It’s been great to meet Jordan and learn about the absolutely brilliant Argyle employability course. The course helps people that are far away from the job market, teaching them soft skills and giving them the confidence they need to get jobs. Listening to the stories of those who have been on the course who are now in jobs is just so great. Well done Jordan and everyone involved in the scheme. Keep up the good work!”

Jordan adds: “The group were amazing. They came in with low confidence and struggling for a routine. They all coped with different situations, engaged really well, and I am so proud that they have achieved employment and formed lasting friendships.”
