NCS GroupAFTER partaking in the National Citizen Service Autumn 2015 programme, NCS graduate Annie Lewis, shares her experiences on the programme, before she starts her sports journalism work placement with Argyle Community Trust. During her time on NCS, Annie grew as an individual, as she not only gained a renowned qualification but also overcame fears she never thought she would.

The NCS Project looks to develop young individuals and provide them with valuable life skills that will be highly beneficial in the future. The weekend event encouraged team building, independent living and development for communication and punctuality. The three-day stay in Weymouth included a variety of fun-filled activities, ranging from paddle boarding to rock climbing; an event to “suit everyone”.

Within the short break in October, Annie evolved from being the quiet group member to one of the boldest leaders in the team. Her team’s social action project (SAP) became an insight to all group members about how much difference NCS can actually make.

Annie said: “When the opportunity of NCS came up, I simply thought it was too good to be true – a holiday, work experience and a qualification! What else was needed?

“Within the short time I spent with the community on my SAP, the amount of praise our team received made me realise how worthwhile the programme was – not only can you make a difference in your own life but you can make differences in others’ too.”

Since completing the programme, Annie has continued to put herself forward for voluntary work and in teamwork: “NCS gave me the confidence to pursue my ambitions and to apply the skills I gained.

“NCS has set me up with a set of life skills that I will now use throughout my life; a truly unforgettable and invaluable experience.”
