Impact Story: Callum’s journey into employment

When Callum first visited the Youth Employment Hub at The Hub at Foulston Park he was looking for support to take the next step in his career. Having previously worked in hospitality, he was eager to return to an industry he enjoyed and use the skills and experience he had already developed.

Delivered by Argyle Community Trust in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions, the Youth Employment Hub helps young people aged 16-24 build confidence, develop employability skills, and move closer to education, training, apprenticeships, and employment.

Working closely with the Youth Hub Coordinator, Callum received tailored support to help him achieve his goals. Together they reviewed and strengthened his CV, explored suitable opportunities, and completed job applications, ensuring he was well-prepared to re-enter the workplace.

Recognising Callum’s passion for hospitality and his positive attitude, the Youth Hub Coordinator took a proactive approach by speaking with the Food and Beverage Manager at Foulston Park’s Common Ground Café about potential opportunities. This led to Callum being offered a trial shift, giving him the chance to showcase his skills, work ethic, and enthusiasm.

The trial proved to be a success.

Today, Callum is a valued member of the Common Ground Café team, where he has secured regular work and continues to develop his skills in a supportive environment. His journey demonstrates how personalised support, combined with the right opportunity, can help young people overcome barriers and progress into meaningful employment.

Richard Hackett, Common Ground Café Food and Beverage Manager at the Hub at Foulston Park, said: “Callum is a reliable and valued member of our team. He is flexible, proactive, and always willing to get involved in whatever needs doing. He approaches every task with a positive attitude and is a real asset to the café.”

Callum added: “I’m really grateful for all the support and opportunities I’ve received through Argyle Community Trust. The team helped me build my confidence and gave me the chance to get back into work doing something I enjoy.”

Callum’s story highlights the lasting impact that targeted employability support can have on a young person’s future. By providing practical guidance, personalised support, and access to real employment opportunities, the Youth Employment Hub continues to help young people across Plymouth take positive steps towards sustainable careers.
