THE Marjon 1st team produced the best performance of the season this afternoon in front of a good crowd at Marjon University.

Players on the degree programme with Marjon and Argyle were outstanding in a 4-2 win over a very strong visiting side from Southampton Solent University.

We asked the squad to play free flowing, high energy, no nonsense football and we certainly got that,” said manager Gary Jeffrey.

“The boys were incredible in the opening 35 minutes and Southampton must have felt like they had been hit by a formula 1 car. Out of the blocks was an understatement, incredible pressing and high tempo football. A joy to watch.

Marjons went 3-0 up in the space of 25 minutes, with goals scored by Lewis Irwin , Pete Ireland and Phil Payne before Southampton responded with a soft goal on half time from a corner.

The second half started in the same fashion with the Marjon lads pressing and playing with freedom but it was Southampton who scored from a beauty of a free kick with 20 minuntes to go.

Marjon had another gear, however and didn't let this effect them, they scored the fourth of the game to win the tie, man of the match Louis Irwin with his second to secure all three points.
